Improving My Craft - Highlights of the Melanin & Light Workshop | Charlotte Photographer

As a family photographer in Charlotte, NC, it is extremely important to me to always hone my photography skills. Back in early February, I attended the Melanin and Light Workshop, hosted by Kristen Gordon of K. Marie Photography and Denise Benson of Denise Benson Photography . In addition to learning some new tips on photographing and editing black and brown skin, one of my personal goals was to also continue to work on posing, angles, and showing a variety of perspectives in my photos.

One thing that I’ve learned over the years is that—no matter where you are personally or professionally—the learning never stops! Whether it’s workshops, conferences, or just spending some one-on-one time with another professional in your field, there’s always ways to continue to improve your craft.

The workshop was held in Rock Hill, SC, which is right outside of Charlotte (perfect!). We were able to work with two wonderful models, Ashley and Caylen, who were both beautiful and very easy to work with. The great thing about this workshop was that there were a variety of skill levels present—from brand new photographers to experienced photographers who have been in the game for years. Not only that, but the hosts were very knowledgeable and willing to share their experiences with the workshop participants.

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the workshop.

I honestly don’t think we could’ve asked for a better day for taking photos. While it was a bit cool and breezy (but not at all bad considering the workshop was held in February!), the overcast day was perfect for some awesome soft lighting!

I will definitely be implementing my takeaways from this workshop in my future photo sessions. And if you are a photographer (whether beginner or advanced), I would definitely recommend it!

What did you think of my photos from the Melanin & Light Workshop?
